Who doesn’t love flipping through the glossy pages of a lust-worthy food magazine? I know I do!
But you see, food magazines in print are something of a rare thing in today’s hectic media climate. With more and more mainstream media platforms taking a shift from print to digital, we see an increase in the number of good niche food publications that take food magazine design to a whole new level.
GOAL: It should sell the brand, it has to be visually appealing and different from the other cover pages on the newsstand to attract the new readers.
Magazine cover page serves several purposes. The basis of most magazine covers is going to be either a photograph or an illustration. Either way, appealing images tend to have a good amount of contrast between light and dark regions. Obviously, for text to be readable, it must be light and set against a dark background or vice versa.
One of the main functions of the magazine cover is to sell the issue’s inside stories. This often means a lot of short teaser lines floating about the cover page.
PROCESS : Planning is key, and when it comes to designing a magazine the planning usually involves some kind of grid work. Using columns provides structure when designing a layout as it helps break up the content and improves readability. Also, it looks so much better than pages full of wide daunting text.
Type : The choice of font is important, but the kind of “family” you choose is project-specific. It is conventional for designers to use only sans-serif fonts that are suitable for body text is just a rule of thumb. Although serif fonts, with their greater complexity, may tend to be less effective at small sizes, there are many other factors to consider.
Background Image: Using a nice large image makes design feel less cluttered .
Elements: Some extra elements have been added to break the monotony in design and to make it interesting.
